Born in Odessa on 2nd Febryary 1876, died in Dubrovnik, Croatia in 19^th November 1937. Studied at Odessa Drawing School; at Imperial Academy of Arts until 1903; in Paris and Leipzig. He was active in Odessa and St. Petersburg until 1904; mostly abroad, especially Germany during 1904-1912. Alexis Hanzen worked in Odessa in 1912-1914 and in Crimea in 1914; in Odessa in 1917-1919. Immigrated to Bulgaria around 1920, where he settled in Sofia and afterwards to the Kingdome of Yugoslavia. Began exhibiting in 1898. Exhibited with Imperial Academy of Arts; Society of Russian Watercolorists; St. Petersburg Society of Artists; Paris, Prague, Bucharest, Rio de Janeiro, Rome and Zagreb. Alexis Hanzen traveled through Macedonia in 1924. In this period, he visited the Kingdome of Yugoslavia frequently. He made at least one work in this period: “Railway through Mountains – Shar Planina, Skopje”, sold by the auction house Bonhams, London, UK on 26-11-2007 (lot number 46).
