Born on 22-07-1881 in Wunsiedel, died on 14-02-1965 in Vienna. He was most famous Austrian animal painters. At first, he studied at the Munich School of Arts and Crafts. In 1898 after a yearlong stay in Italy he went to Vienna where he studied with Christian Griepenkerl at the Academy of Fine Arts and later at the School for Applied Arts with Alfred Roller. He was a student of August Eisenmenger and Ch. Griepenkerl, and he learned etching from William Unger. From Vienna he went to Munich, where he worked with Carl von Marr, and in 1907 he returned to Vienna. At the Wiener Werkstätte Jungnickel became one of the most important designers of textiles, wallpapers and postcards. Together with Gustav Klimt he worked on the interior designs of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. In 1911 Jungnickel became a professor at the ‘Kunstgewerbeschule’ in Frankfurt on Main. Through his contacts to Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka he became acquainted with and endorsed the Austrian expressionism. From 1938 to 1952 Jungnickel lived in voluntary exile in Abbazia, Croatia. Jungnickel got many national and international awards. In 1936 and 1950 he exhibited at the Venice biennial arts exhibition. In 1952 a great exhibition with his works of art was held by the Albertina in Vienna. Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel visited Skopje around 1910-20, perhaps as a war painter. His watercolor “Feiernde in Uskub” was sold by the auction house Dorotheum, Vienna Austria on 20.05.2008, (lot nr. 24).
